Every April, the Army National Guard Child and Youth Program proudly celebrates the Month of the Military Child (MOMC)—a time to recognize and honor the resilience, sacrifices, and contributions of military-connected children. While military children may not wear a uniform, they serve in their own way, adapting to the challenges and triumphs that come with being part of a military family.
Military children embody strength, adaptability, and a global perspective, shaped by the unique experiences of military life. Whether it’s long deployments or frequent separations from loved ones, they meet these challenges with courage and grace.
Throughout MOMC, we encourage families, communities, and organizations to show appreciation for the military children in their lives. Join us in celebrating their strength and fostering the connections that help build a strong, supportive community.
While April is a dedicated time for recognition, we acknowledge that military children serve alongside their families all year long. Their sacrifices allow their parents to protect and serve our nation, and for that, we express our deepest gratitude—not just this month, but always.
In 2026, the Army National Guard Child and Youth Program will celebrate Purple Up Day on April 10th. On this special day, we wear purple—a color that represents all branches of the military—to recognize the strength, resilience, and sacrifices of military-connected youth.
While the National Guard observes Purple Up Day on the second Friday in April (April 10, 2026) other military components and community partners may celebrate on different days throughout the month. No matter the date, the message remains the same: military children serve, too.
We encourage schools, businesses, and community organizations to participate by wearing purple, hosting events, and sharing messages of appreciation. Join us in recognizing the incredible military kids in our communities and showing them that their sacrifices do not go unnoticed.
Across the country, Army National Guard Child and Youth Programs in each state and territory host special activities to celebrate Month of the Military Child (MOMC). From fun community events and youth workshops to recognition ceremonies and day or overnight camps these programs provide opportunities for military children to be celebrated and supported.
Each state and territory offers unique ways to honor military-connected youth, so be sure to check out what’s happening near you! Click here or access the My Local CYS program page on the website or app to connect with your Child and Youth Program Coordinators and find MOMC events in your area.
